The Value of a Support Group
About Lung Cancer Specific Support Groups and Non-specific Cancer Support Groups:
I am a woman and a 9-year lung cancer survivor. I attend an in-person Lung Cancer Support Group. I also attend a local women’s support group, “Celebrate Life” which is not lung cancer specific. Both are helpful to me, yet in different ways.
As a woman I find being around other women survivors is healing and I draw strength from their testimonies. It is like a sisterhood, we are of the same heart not just the same species.
Because of the stigma towards lung cancer (many people think that the victim either deserves or brought the cancer upon themselves) – both I and my caregiver needed a support group specific to lung cancer as well. I also needed a venue to fight lung cancer!
Other cancers typically elicit the reaction, “Oh my, I am so sorry – how can we help?” However, when a caregiver tells someone their loved one has lung cancer, 99% of the time that statement is met with, “Oh, did he (or she) smoke?” That statement shrivels the soul, perhaps unintentionally, and is rude and cruel. For this reason, Lung Cancer Support Groups are open to the caregiver also!
Lung Cancer statistics are frightening, as historically so little has been done. Only in the past few years are we seeing more survivors, thanks to the CT scan and incidental findings. 160,000 deaths from lung cancer a year in America is a horrifying statistic to face by yourself. We hope this will change with the new CT scan guidelines and Medicare coverage.
At our lung cancer support group-
- We share information dealing with lung cancer
- We share our experiences dealing with lung cancer
- We discuss new research in lung cancer
- We advocate for lung cancer
I would like to see Lung Cancer Support Groups all over the State of Florida. If you do not have access to an in-person lung cancer group, there are many on line groups and I would suggest finding an in-person cancer survivor group to attend as well, even if it is not lung cancer specific. We need human contact with others who have a shared interest!
